Outreach Activities

In 2017 IFAE organized a number of outreach activities:

1. BOJOS PER LA FÍSICA

One-year educational program targeted for high- school students. 150 students applied. Activity Coordinated in collaboration with ICN2 and Funded by Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera. http://bojosperlafisica.ifae.es/

2. CAZADORES DE RAYOS GAMMA

3. BIYSC - Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge

Two-week international excellence program for high-school students:https://biysc.org/. IFAE collaborated with the project DETECTA for building a WMPC for cosmic ray detection.

Federico Sánchez tutored the students in collaboration with Thorsten Lux and Joan Boix. Undergraduate students Aina Marquez and Daniel Muñoz also collaborated with the project.

4. PHYSICS MASTERCLASSES

All-day educational activity promoted by CERN and the IPPOG. 50 students participated in 2017.

5. Girls in Science

Activity to celebrate the International Day of Women & Girls in Science addressed to women students and teachers. 40 students participated in 2017.

5. The Physics Show

The Bonn Physics Show conducted by Herbert Dreiner took place last Thursday, September 21, at the Cosmocaixa. The group performed the show twice and almost 500 people, mostly students and teachers, attended the event. IFAE organized the outreach event.

6. MAKER FAIRE Barcelona

IFAE participated in the 2017 Edition of the Maker Faire Barcelona with a 3D printed version of the Cosmic Microwave Background and a setup that transformed the temperature fluctuations measured by Planck mission into sound.

7. HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS AT IFAE & PIC

More than 10 high-school students have had their first experience in research at IFAE in 2016 through different programs, namely Joves i Ciència, Premis Extraordinaris de Batxillerat and Treballs de Recerca.

PIC is very active in the ESCOLAB program since 2011, an initiative that offers outreach activities for high-schools in the Barcelona area. Josep Flix ** coordinates the visit program, with the participation of ** Antonio Pérez-Calero , ** Jorge Carretero** , and ** Nadia Tonello** . Around 600 students have visited PIC in 2017.

8. SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS AT IFAE

Educational activity for undergraduate students that offer a 1-month stay at IFAE in July. 50 applications in 2016. Activity funded by the Severo Ochoa program. https://summerfellowships.ifae.es/
