Scientific Activities

in 2018

During 2018 the Experimental Division’s activities focused on 10 main projects, most of them long-term efforts. These projects span the fields of High Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology, and include the development of detectors for Medical Imaging applications as well as related instrumentation projects.

High Energy Physics

1. ATLAS, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN

During 2018 the IFAE ATLAS group has remained strongly involved in both detector operations and physics analyses. The group has also maintained its visibility within the ATLAS Collaboration through a number of important management positions.

2. ATLAS upgrades

During 2018 the IFAE Pixel group has advanced in the following areas: 3D Pixel Sensors for the HL-LHC, Low Gain Avalanche Detectors and CMOS Monolithic devices for the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade.

3. T2K, a neutrino long base-line experiment in Japan.

During 2018 the IFAE Neutrino group focused on the preparation of the T2K near detector upgrade and the evaluation of the liquid argon dual phase (LAr DP) concept as far detector for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE)

4. MAGIC telescopes, on the el Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma

During 2018, the main focus of MAGIC group at IFAE has been the scientific exploitation of the instrument: the MAGIC Telescopes.

5. CTA: Cherenkov telescope Array telescopes

In 2018, the IFAE group has completed the integration of the first LST camera and has continued participating with high impact and visibly in CTA, keeping important responsibilities also at the management level

6. The Dark Energy Survey (DES)

In 2018, the group at IFAE led two papers involving cross-correlations between DES and CMB measurements

6. The Dark Energy Survey (DES)

In 2018, the group at IFAE completed the production of the GFA cameras for the DESI project

8. The PAU Survey

2018 has been an important year for PAUS as the first scientific results coming from the project have been published in scientific journals

9. The Euclid Mission

In 2018, the Euclid’s Filter Wheel was successfully installed in the NISP structure. This milestone finish the hardware contributions of the first IFAE project funded directly by the Space program.

Applied Physics

10. Medical Imaging

During 2018 the medical imaging/applied physics group at IFAE was engaged in 4 different applied projects.

The activities of the Theory Division during 2018 continued along three lines: Standard Model Physics, Beyond the Standard Model, and Astroparticle Physics & Cosmology.

1. Standard Model

2. Beyond the Standard Model

3. Astroparticle Physics & Cosmology
