The interest of the Neutrino physics group focuses on experiments studying long-baseline neutrino oscillations. IFAE has been involved since the beginning in the leading experiment in this field, T2K in Japan. The group contributed to the design and construction of the near detector (ND280) and made important contributions to the data analysis. T2K has provided key results awarded with the 2016 Breakthrough Prize on Fundamental Physics. More recently, in 2020, T2K published in Nature the first indication of CP violation in neutrino oscillations. Members of IFAE regularly held leadership positions within the T2K collaboration of almost 600 researchers. T. Lux is one of the four elected members of the T2K Executive Committee.
A significant improvement in CP measurements will be achieved in the T2K-II phase, which includes an upgrade of the beam and the ND280 detector. The IFAE group plays a key role in the ND280 upgrade. T. Lux is the co-leader of the overall ND280 upgrade project (a CERN experiment, NP07, for which T. Lux is the co-spokesperson) involving 100 researchers, and is responsible for the technical coordination. T2K-II data taking will last until 2026. Afterwards, ND280 will serve as the first and crucial near detector of the future HyperK experiment. IFAE joined HyperK in 2021.
