Outreach Activities

in 2024

In 2024 IFAE organized a number of outreach activities:

1. BOJOS PER LA FÍSICA

Bojos per la Física is a one-year educational program aimed at high school students, offering them the chance to explore various fields and applications of physics. IFAE coordinates the program in collaboration with ICN2 and the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera. https://www.fundaciocatalunya-lapedrera.com/es/locos-ciencia/cursos/fisica

2. SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS AT IFAE

It is an educational activity for undergraduate students that offers a 1-month stay at IFAE in July. 62 applications received in 2024. https://summerfellowships.ifae.es/

3. Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC)

BIYSC is a two-week international excellence program for high school students. IFAE develops and runs the activity “Cosmic Rays: Astrophysics at Your Fingertips”, in which students design, build, and operate a cosmic ray detector based on SiPM technology, specially developed at IFAE for outreach purposes. https://biysc.org/

4. PICO Project – PhysICs fOr all

Within this Horizon Europe-funded outreach initiative, IFAE created activities targeted at the general public and students, providing them with opportunities to engage directly with real-life researchers and discover the physics of the cosmos. The project also included IFAE’s participation in the European Researchers’ Night (ERN).

5. Escolab: The Physics of the Universe for Everyone

The outreach team leads this activity, which includes a guided visit to IFAE’s facilities, opportunities to meet researchers, a workshop for teachers, and an interactive session with students focused on the physics of the cosmos. The activity is adapted to different high school levels. https://www.barcelona.cat/escolab/es/activitat/la-fisica-de-lunivers-per-a-tothom-230967

6. Pint of Science

Once a year, IFAE researchers take part in Pint of Science, bringing cutting-edge physics to the public in an informal and engaging environment. https://pintofscience.es/event/BCN-AG-1

7. Have a coffee with a cosmologist

On Sunday 18th February 2024 Diego Blas, Andreu Font-Ribera, Lluís Galbany, Eduard Massó, Clara Murgui and Oriol Pujolàs participated in the activity “Have a coffee with a cosmologist” at MACBA in Barcelona.

This was part of the exhibition “108 Days” at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) by the artist Lydia Ourahmane. Eduard Massó coordinated the activity.

The museum visitors were invited to talk about what we know about the Universe and the pending open questions with a cup of coffee in an informal setup.

8,. PIC Supports Euclid Outreach with Simulations and Visualizations

In 2024, researchers at the Port d’Informació Científica (PIC) played a key role in two outreach videos for the Euclid mission. They contributed scientific and technical expertise to the Euclid Consortium’s video “Why Do We Need Simulations for the Euclid Telescope?” and to ESA’s video “Weak Gravitational Lensing: How Euclid Maps Dark Matter.” Both videos feature simulations developed at PIC, including the Euclid Flagship—the largest cosmological simulation to date—which is essential for interpreting weak lensing signals and understanding the structure of the Universe. These contributions are part of PIC’s broader effort to make complex cosmological research accessible through accurate and engaging visual content.
